Republican Senator: GOP House Midterm Wins Are ‘Almost Statistically Impossible’

A Republican senator says it is “almost statistically impossible” for Republicans to retain control of the House in the 2026 midterm elections.

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), who is not seeking reelection this year, made the prediction Monday (October 5) during an appearance on MS NOW’s The Beat, The Hill reported.

“I think the House is almost statistically impossible to win at this point,” Tillis said. He predicted Republicans would “take a little bit of a hit this season” but said he expects the party to maintain control of the Senate.

The comments come as Democrats have gained ground in some measures of the 2026 congressional elections.

BIN previously reported that a Kalshi prediction market gave Democrats a 58% chance of controlling both chambers, up from 52% in April. The figures, first reported by Newsweek, reflect market expectations rather than a traditional poll or election result.

Tillis also addressed his support for President Donald Trump and his role as the leader of the Republican Party.

“I’m supporting the president because he’s the head of the party, not because he’s Donald J. Trump, but because he is the face of our party,” Tillis said.

Tillis has previously clashed with Trump despite supporting much of his agenda. In June 2025, he opposed Trump’s “One Big, Beautiful Bill” over its Medicaid provisions, prompting Trump to criticize Tillis and threaten to support a primary challenger.

“I respect President Trump, I support the majority of his agenda, but I don't bow to anybody when the people of North Carolina are at risk and this bill puts them at risk,” Tillis told The Independent at the time.

Tillis announced shortly afterward that he would not seek reelection.
